| Kittens (and cats) like to graze
rather than have set meal times. Cats are carnivores – just because they
live with you does not mean that they should endure a lifetime on processed
junk (tins and dried) food. The modern way of feeding our pets is killing
them early. Too many need dental treatment (anaesthetic risk) and too many
suffering early kidney failure. The bacteria from dirty teeth is swallowed
and enters the blood stream, which then can cause ill health and damages
their internal organs. |
| Cats have it better than dogs as
if allowed out as they can supplement their diet with wild prey – they
eat WHOLE birds, rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, beetles etc). As your
cat won’t be going out to do that, then you can bring nature to them! Your
kitten(s) have been reared on lots of raw meaty bone (raw wings, chicken
carcass, wild raw rabbit, quail and lamb chops). The raw bone is nature’s
natural calcium, the marrow contains life-supporting nutrients, the raw
meat and skin contains other vitamins as well as fibre. If you can stomach
it, dead chicks and pinkies are also a useful addition to the diet (available
from reptile shops). We also feed raw offal (lambs liver, kidney and heart).
Chicken hearts (raw or lightly steamed), are essential as they contain
taurine, a mineral needed by cats. Other items include boiled white fish,
tinned tuna, sardines, pilchards, raw egg yolk, and some crushed raw veggies
(crush in juicer or processor) or lightly steam some vegetables. We usually
hide the veggies in some raw, minced green tripe (not the white butchers
stuff that is bleached)! |
| They have also been fed on other
raw, minced meats (beef/tripe/chicken) with the addition of a teaspoonful
of ‘Cimicat’ milk powder (obtainable from www.vet-medic.co.uk)
and a teaspoonful of bran (bought from health food shops). Bran (coupled
with regular grooming) prevents fur balls occurring! FRESH DRINKING WATER
MUST BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES! |
| In the wild cats would get their
moisture from their prey, and if fed in captivity on a raw meaty bone diet.
If fed dried foods they will drink less than required to remain healthy.
If you can encourage your cat to eat vegetables this will benefit their
health. Many cats like grated carrots, greens and cucumber – experiment!
Feeding the pulp from a juicer (and drink the healthy juice yourself) will
provide vegetables in a manner easily digested (similar to the stomach
contents of wild prey). The sooner you get your kitten used to eating a
variety of raw foods, the better it’s long term health benefits. |
| Although your kitten has been used
to a wide variety of foods, we recommend that you start with wings and
fish, and then gradually reintroduce the other components of the diet!
If diarrhoea does occur, stick with the raw, meaty bones until it has stopped! |
| NEVER GIVE COOKED BONES - RAW BONES
ARE YOUR CATS NATURAL DIET!! NEVER DEFROST RAW BONES IN THE MICROWAVE –
THIS COOKS THEM FROM THE INSIDE! Cats don’t pick the flesh off birds &
mice; they eat the whole thing bones and all. RAW bones keep their teeth
clean – please give plenty of raw cut up rabbit on the bone, quail (complete
with bone) chicken carcasses cut up etc. Not only will your kitten love
to eat this natural fair, but also he will remain much healthier with clean
teeth, and a more active mind and body! |
| Remember the well-aired maxim ‘you
are what you eat’! We feed a very small amount of James Wellbeloved dried
kitten food! Give just enough biscuits for them to graze on overnight,
but not to exceed more than 5% of the diet. Raw, meaty bones maintain a
healthy urinary tract; processed foods fed in large quantities may cause
serious problems such as cystitis, stones and even urinary blockages later
in life. |
