| The Ragdoll is a breed of cat possessing
an outstanding temperament. They are renowned for their loving, placid
and docile nature and, as the name suggests, many cats go completely limp
when picked up. As a result of their trusting personality, Ragdolls are
not suitable cats to be allowed outdoors unattended. They do not have a
great survival instinct and would probably fall asleep in the middle of
the road, let alone fall prey to other territorial cats and dogs (or even
humans). Ragdolls are generally not destructive in the home as they prefer
floor level to climbing. |

| Ragdolls are a semi-longhaired cat
and are one of our largest breeds. Females generally weigh 4 – 6 kg and
males 7 – 10kg, although they take about three to four years to reach full
maturity. All Ragdolls are 'pointed cats', i.e. their faces, ears, legs
and tails are darker than the body. The three pattern varieties are colour
point, bi-colour and mitted. They are available in seal, blue, chocolate
and lilac point colours, red, tortie and lynx points being a more recent
addition. |

| The breed originated in Southern
California in the 1960s with a cat named Josephine. Anne Baker was a breeder
of Persians and her neighbour owned a cat of Persian origin called Blackie
– the mother of Josephine, a blue-eyed, white cat of obvious Angora type.
Josephine was involved in a car accident and following her recovery, produced
litters of kittens with the most unusual characteristics. Their nature
was very different from Josephine's, they were extremely friendly, always
maintained matt free coats and became very floppy when picked up. However,
because of bizarre and scientifically impossible stories over the years
– we shall never really know the real truth of how this wonderful breed
originated. |
